✪ Eilonwy (Black Cauldron) name meaning: Deer. Lloyd Alexander's books indicate it's pronounced EYE-lahn-wee. A poem by Talhaiarn also bears the name "Eilonwy". It may be based on the literary Welsh (i.e. obsolete) word eilon, meaning "deer, stag", with the fanciful suffix -wy (used in the 1800s to adorn river names) added for euphony (melody, song), and found in several Welsh names such as Goronwy, Myfanwy, Cadwy and Daronwy. Or perhaps in reference to a diminutive form: -wy, /wee/ ('wee' witch, 'wee' wizard, illos by TedEnik), and thus, meaning little deer.

Eilonwy en el castillo de Llyr

Eilonwy, Daughter of Angharad, Princess of the Royal House of Llyr. The women in Eilonwy's line were formidable enchantresses. Eilonwy wore a silver crescent moon pendant, her family emblem. She was feisty, kind-hearted, obstinate, outspoken, contentious and fiery when roused to anger. But she also cared deeply about animals and the suffering of people. She was also sharp-witted, strong-willed, and sarcastic. Eilonwy frequently employed unusual similes and metaphors. She’s either fascinated by what her man does, or she grows angry with him for reasons he did not immediately understands.

According to the pronunciation guide created by Lloyd Alexander that is published in some versions of The Chronicles of Prydain, Eilonwy should be pronounced eye-LAHN-wee.
