I am an immigrant. I did not come here looking for “freedom” though as some US citizens have implied and assumed. I am here due to life’s circumstances. Turns out I fell in love with a young man while visiting Southern California. We are no longer in a romantic partnership but we have children together, we are family forever. so I’m not going anywhere for a while. I’ve actually resented having to live in the US. Its not the land of the brave nor the free by any means. It’s a nation built on genocide and racism, that is the blueprint of this “great” nation. Pardon me if I sound angry but you have no idea how many times I’ve heard- “ you don’t look very Mexican” white people say this to me like it’s a complement. Today a white woman complained that one of my posts offended her because she is proud of her European ancestors who came here seeking the freedom that I also get to enjoy.
Now I can’t remember how many times I’ve been asked- “when did you arrive in America?” Mind you these people have college degrees. And yet they are not aware that Mexico is North America? They are also ignorant to the fact that the indigenous people of the Americas were living in beauty and freedom before their European ancestors came to take what was not theirs. We need to recognize the difference between being schooled and being educated. We were force-fed by colonialists. It seems to me that as we rise to reclaim our indigenous ways and culture, some white folk become defensive. Now I am not generalizing because I have many allies who are actually doing their work to unlearn their racist programming and hierarchal mentality. Some of my white friends are pagans, people who are deeply connected to their pre-Christianity earth based spiritual practices. Religious indoctrination is colonization and such doctrines are still imposed throughout the entire American continent, from Canada to Chile. European rule stole peoples lands, language and culture, so please think twice before talking about “Freedom” it’s such a tired word, it means nothing until peoples of color are honored and treated with respect.

This chocolate is very special for a number of reasons...

1. I am one of the few I know of still making chocolate in a very traditional way...by tempering it on stone (look up tempering chocolate on marble to learn more) this makes the process way more time and labor intensive but to me it is the highest way to honor the cacao which has been a highly commodified and abused precious resource here in our culture. 99.999999999999999999999% of the chocolate you buy in the store is machine made. Handcrafted is the way.
2. This chocolate is sweetened solely with Wildflower Honey from here in Taos, New Mexico where it is made! 🍯
3. Each bar features a different Wildcrafted herb from the Southwest. I forage most of these plants myself 💗

It's an exciting year for me as a maker as the potency of the medicines contained within these sweet little bars are even more deeply felt. Thank you to everyone for your patience. Each year I receive several emails asking when the chocolate shop will open again and the answer is always, in the Fall when the weather begins to cool and chocolate will not melt in transit.
